Jan Radersma & Marieta Reijerkerk - Unheard silence

The work of Marieta Reijerkerk and Jan Radersma differs considerably, for example if you see Marieta's spatial diptychs and objects next to Jan's modest landscape paintings, but the affinity of their work is in content. Marieta and Jan's work can be characterized as unheard silence; that which remains after many events in their lives and memories they have of them. Both artists collect their experiences and observations, record this residue in a painting or assemblage and pass it on to the viewer without a message. Both process leaps through time and space, as it were. Ultimately, a serenity remains, an illuminating peace.

Marieta Reijerkerk explores and discovers certain places in, for example, Mexico, India and China: 'I love being physically on the road. On my explorations I see remains, for example shipwrecks on the beach or walls of houses that have suddenly become available, from which I can read what once happened there, or what was there. You are portraying a history.’ Jan Radersma travelled a lot until he was 45, including Indonesia (the former Dutch East Indies), the former ‘habitat’ of his family and himself, France and the Northern Netherlands. He now processes the landscapes from his past and the ‘imprints’ that certain people have left in his memory. Sometimes Jan combines landscapes for his paintings on various (sometimes quite thick) supports. Both work in a traditional way. Jan emphasises the careful preparation of his paintings and the making of his own paint, in which he refers emphatically to his academy years. Marieta is very particular about the right brushes and the use of materials.
